Poverty Growth Elasticity in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Meta-Analysis

$5

We apply meta-regression analysis to the empirical literature that investigates the growth elasticity of poverty in sub-Saharan African countries (SSA). We analyze 475 estimates from 26 studies that examine the effect of growth on poverty. Taken together, the studies imply a negative and statistically significant effect, but individual estimates vary a lot. We find that data type, sample coverage, (non)treatment of the potential endogeneity of growth and publication characteristics are relevant factors that explain the heterogeneity in the growth-poverty literature. We find also evidence of publications bias in the literature
